just three sleeps to go...

For those unaware, Nathan and I are heading off to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya for three weeks. We are going with a church mission organization called CMS. It's a bit different from your normal 'mission' trip, as it is designed to give people who are training to be leaders within the church a taste of the developing work, and create an awareness of the many issues that pretty much 2/3 of our world face (poverty, HIV/AIDS etc), as well as an understanding of what mission might be like for those they send or support from their church's in the future.

We are going to do all kinds of things while we are there, including visiting a variety of projects in Nairobi, many of them in a slum called Kibera. Kibera from what I have read and heard is HUGE! it is home to almost a million people, 1/4 of Nairobi's population. There is no sewage system in the slum and very little runner water, which makes it a breading ground for disease. It is over crowded and the majority of people are without work. Up until recently the government of Kenya didn't even acknowledge this slum really existed, but things are beginning to change. You must see the film the 'Constant Gardener,' not only is it a wicked movie, but some of it is filmed in Kibera and gives an accurate snap shot of what its like. As you can tell I am really excited about visiting this place...I'm not entirely sure why... i know my mind is going to be blown and my heart probably broken a thousand timed over!

After three weeks in Nairobi, Nathan and I are parting way with the rest of the group who will return to NZ. From there we are flying to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia where we will spend a week. For those of you who don't know Nathan, he spent 5 months in Addis working for a child sponsorship agency before meeting me. He LOVED his time there, and totally fall in love with the people, country and culture. He would really love to work there again... and I think I might also! (that we shall see in 4 week!!) So, this is a bit of a scouting trip... see if the wifey falls in loves with it as much as he did.

I think this is enough for now. I can fall in the rest of the details as we go.
:-) back to packing for me!
